Anyone who’s listened to Ballroom Records’ output from the past while will know all too well that this is a label that doesn’t take half measures when it comes to churning out uncompromising techno.
Their latest is a fine indication of what we’re talking about, and comes at us from Michael Ly aka Durtysoxxx. The US native is enjoying a fine time of it of late, and aside from repping In Deep ’n’ Dance at ADE this year, he’ll also be throwing it down at a number of west-side warehouses over the coming months. His debut release for Ballroom, ‘Streamates’ sees him bring the heat in a manner that DJs from the harder side of the spectrum will definitely appreciate.
Opening the release is the sounds of the title track. A rough and ready dancefloor destroyer, it’s a high BPM battle weapon that will doubtless go down a treat in the hands of similarly-inclined DJs such as Nicole Moudaber and Adam Beyer. A techno treat that’s laced with personality, it gets us underway in auspicious fashion.
It’s then up to label head Kaiser Souzai to provide the first of the remixes, a task he completes with exactly the sort of flair we’ve come to expect from him over the years. His take on the original is a hearty, full-blooded one that takes no prisoners. With a weight groove lingering throughout, it too plays out like a true delight, before the EP’s closing salvo, DJ Lion’s remix enters the fray. A truly hypnotic and stirring journey, it serves up a tantalising interpretation of the original. A truly madcap offering with hints of old-school rave sounds at its core, it keeps us guessing from the first beat to the last. Majestic stuff all round.
